Hi-I'm super adorable aren't I? My name is Baby J, and I
was rescued out of an urban shelter in MD. I was sitting in a crate in a
hallway, and most people walked by me without even seeing my beautiful face.
How could they miss me? I am super model! I am about 8 1/2 wks old, and weigh about 9 or 10lbs.Though it has not yet
been confirmed by a veterinarian, both the shelter and Mutts Matter think I
am either deaf or have very significant hearing lost. I don't hear whistles,
the other dogs, or loud clapping. Luckily, I was born this way so I don't
know anything is wrong with me.
I am good with all my dogs, and love my 3 foster siblings, (who are much
bigger than me). I can play with the big kids well! I am still learning when
I am being an annoying puppy and since I can't hear when my foster siblings
tell me to knock it off, I am learning to read their body language so I can
be a good doggy buddy to my siblings. I didn't know I wasn't supposed to
nibble on ears....I thought it was a sign of love. But, I am very smart! I've
made great progress on my puppy housetraining. As long as my foster momma
takes me out on a regular basis, I am really good at going potty outside.
This means my adopter should have a flexible schedule because I need to go
potty every few hours. My foster momma has a neat hand signal she gives me to
say "good boy" since I can't hear her tell me. In fact, my foster
momma is teaching me all kinds of hand signals so that I can learn sit, down,
good boy, and all the other things my foster siblings know.
I am really looking for an adopter who thinks I am perfect and wants to spend
the time to teach me hand-signals and everything I need to be a model doggy
citizen. Luckily, I am super food motivated so I am willing to learn anything
for a cube of cheese.

April Update --
Baby J
is a 4-5 month old mixed breed puppy. We think he is boxer or American bulldog
mix. What we do know for sure is that Baby J is DEAF as the day is long!
There is a development connection between dogs who lack pigment - aka our
white little baby dog here - and deafness. But, trust us when we say that
Baby J's disability doesn't slow him down too much. In fact, Baby J is a
normal, crazy, very active, and super affectionate puppy.
Baby J is
learning hand signal obedience commands. He knows sit, lay
down, come, and is working on stay. He also knows "touch" which
means that he uses your human hand as a guide for where to direct his
attention by touching your hand with his mouth. He is also learning how to
relax his puppy energy by getting rewarding for quietly laying down next to
his foster momma. Since Baby J is a young, active puppy he is still learning
how to keep his attention for a while but a lot of short obedience sessions
are helping him learn and stay focused. His adoptive home should be excited
and willing to help Baby J learn more hand signals.
Baby J lives with two dogs in his foster home and LOVES to play, roughhouse,
cuddle, and sleep with his foster siblings. Right now, Baby J does have some
fear - perhaps because of his deafness - around new dogs and is working with
his foster momma and a professional trainer that new dogs are opportunities
to form new friends and shouldn't be scary. He expressed his fear with some
barking to try to seem scary but it isn't fooling us! We are hopefully Baby J
will soon be adding new doggy friends into his inner circle.
Baby J is great with his house and crate training. In fact, he sleeps SO
soundly in his crate that you need to tap him to wake him up in the morning.
Unlike the other dogs who hear you when you put your feet on the ground as
you get out of bed, Baby J sleeps soundly and peacefully. Once you tap his
shoulder to wake him up, Baby J wakes up with such zest and vigor for every
new day.
Baby J is certainly a special puppy. He does have a disability and a little
fear. He will need a home that will love him, knows that being serious about
training is the best way to show your love for his long-term happiness, and
will give him the safety and security to grow into a happy and healthy home.
