Miko

Urgent: 11/17/11

Breed: Akita

Age/Sex:   8 yrs/Male

This is a plea to find Miko, a deaf 8 yr old Akita a new home.  He is in boarding with Dr. Robyn Della in Louisville,KY.

Miko is in boarding at the veterinary clinic I work at. I have been taking him with me on weekends, to adoption events etc (I do a lot of pit bull focused rescue). His owner has never had to re-home a dog before and so is trusting me to help her screen everything. She has given me permission to use my contacts and my friend's contacts in the rescue/adoption world to try to find him a suitable place.

If he goes to a home with another dog I think it would be best if they were low key versus pestering him to play. He does okay with my crew as long as they are not in his face too much (and they are a wild bunch at times). I have not cat tested him and can do so but for now would recommend a home with no cats.

"Miko is an 8 yr old deaf Akita who is in dire need of a rescue or adopter to step up for him.  He is the nicest Akita I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with in veterinary medicine.  Miko has been in the same house since he was a puppy.  His owners have done an excellent job socializing him and training him.  He was not born deaf, but rather lost his hearing in 2010 due to an adverse drug reaction.  He knows hand signals for sit, down, stay, shake.  I can tell you that this dog is the most docile Akita!  He allows me to handle all parts of him, he helps me heft his body into the bath tub, and he allows my boyfriend to wrestle him to the ground while playing.

Miko is in need of a home without young children because of his deafness.  His current owner had an incident in which her young son (just learning to walk) fell on Miko's head while Miko was sleeping.  Miko was of course startled.  He swung around, scrambled to get up, and in the process the child was injured.  Everyone who has known Miko his whole life believes that he had no intention of hurting the boy.   Given the fact that the owner was in the room at the same time and just couldn't catch her son fast enough to prevent the incident they have decided that the best thing to prevent any future issues is to find Miko a new home to grow old in.

Miko has been an only pet since puppyhood.  At the time his owner brought him home she had two cats.  Miko enjoyed chasing them as a young puppy so she eventually re-homed them for their comfort and quality of life.  Rich and I have been bringing Miko home on weekends for the past two months to give him a break from the kennel and we have found Miko to be fairly dog tolerant.  We take him out all over town to restaurants, pet adoption events, and stores and have found that Miko only has issues with other dogs when they get right up in his face.  We have introduced him to all of our dogs (6 altogether - ranging in size from a 16 yr old 10 lb shih tzu to a 1 yr old Staffie) and with appropriate introduction he has done phenomenally well for a dog who has never really interacted with other canines.  Over the last few weekends we have begun integrating him into free time with the calmer of the group and he has done fine.

Miko has two "major" health issues to note.

1.  He is Hypothryoid - this is relatively inexpensive to treat.

2.  He has allergies - seasonally worse in the Fall and spring.  The owner has had him to dermatologists and they currently have him on a treatment plan of Keflex (she gets it free or on the $4 generic list here locally) and a VERY mild dose of pred as needed.  I have found that Stinging Nettle herbal supplement helps as well.

Other than that he is in amazing shape for a dog his size and age.  He still enjoys playing in the yard and going for decently long walks.

Miko deserves to live the remaining years of his life out in peace and with love.  He is a very special boy.

I have included some photo's of Miko and here is a link to a video we made of him: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=199004996836655

I'd really like to get this guy out of a concrete block kennel as soon as possible.
