EDEL UPDATE: I have to apologize on behalf of my foster mommy…she is way behind on updating everyone on my story. I guess she is just too busy giving me kisses to write. Finally, I got her to write about my favorite subject – ME!
I am blossoming in to a beautiful young lady if I do say myself…and I do! My surgery is long behind me and I recovered quickly. As a result of the surgery, I have increased light sensitivity, but alas, I still cannot ‘see.’ I do however, navigate well in my familiar world and my sense of smell guides me just fine. I navigate the yard and on walks with ease and many folks comment that they wouldn't know I was blind and deaf if I wasn’t wearing my fancy red coat. Foster mom giggles when folks stop her thinking that I am HER guide dog. Boy would she be in trouble if that was the case!
I get along with other dogs once I get to know them. Since I can’t see or hear them approaching, I startle easy so I need to get to know new friends slowly. I meet all human visitors with more kisses then they can stand…I am just a social butterfly. My foster family treats me just like a ‘regular’ dog so that means lots of treats, pets and the occasional new toy to entertain my busy puppy self. To know me, is to love me. To meet me, is to be inspired. Ready for some inspiration in your life? Open minds and hearts welcome to apply for the privilege of loving simply perfect me! Hi! My name is Edel! Found wandering the streets - not a new story for abandoned dogs - but especially cruel in my case since I am deaf and nearly blind. Thankfully I was found before I fell victim to any more cruelty and was brought into the shelter. Again, not a German Shepherd, but a dog in need is a dog in need and SCSR opened their arms and welcomed me with love.
Besides for my disabilities, I am full of potential and lots of puppy love. I am pretty much a normal, fun-loving puppy although some accommodations need to be made to keep safe. I underwent surgery on May 21st to see if any improvement could be made in my vision. Small gains were made to allow me more light sensitivity, but I still don't know what I am missing out on in the seeing world so I am not bothered in the least. I still have fun and play with the best of them!
Please check back in for updates on progress and recovery. The surgery was expensive, but my future is priceless and SCSR has committed to giving me any opportunity possible. In love yet...? (Edel: Female, Australian Shepherd, White with Gray Spots, DOB 2/14/08, ~30 lbs. and growing!)
Special thanks to Dr. Chavkin and his fantastic staff at VRCC for taking such great care of Edel!
