Max is a beautiful "Lethal White" Aussie who
needs a forever home. He just turned 2 in November and is full of life and
energy! He loves to run and play and to be with people. You would not know
that he is deaf and visually impaired. Max is currently being fostered in Statesboro, GA. His photo can be seen at the GA Aussie Rescue site and on their petfinder page. Max needs someone who is willing to
devote the time necessary to train him. He has learned a few touch commands.
He is very smart and eager to please - he is definitely treat
oriented. Max would love to have a forever home - he is a sweet boy who wants
nothing but to be with his human.
MAX IS MAGNIFICENT!
Max has a homozygous genetic defect. This may manifest in several anomalies,
but commonly in vision and hearing. The defect is 100% preventable. For the intentionals, the Lethal Whites are generally doomed. The
breeder already has a plan of action for dogs that cannot be sold.
Accidentals fare better as a rule, because the breeder didn't realize the
genes involved and often thinks of the pup as a 'dud'. They may be lucky
& survive long enough to get to rescue and safety. If they go to a
municipal, overloaded shelter, there simply aren’t resources to deal
with something the shelter often doesn't understand and the puppies are
marked for euthanasia.
There are two things we can do:
Educate on the merling gene which causes the
defect. When you breed merle to merle approx. 25% of the litter will be
lethal whites.
SPAY NEUTER is the only ANSWER. The statistics shown on the HSUS page give us
an estimate of 3.6 million dogs and cats killed in this country in 2007.
