I went out and spent about 25 minutes with her today. IMO - she is only 3 to
4 years old, small, about 50 lbs. Very sweet and loving, walks well on a
leash. She cowered away from the female handler when we brought her to the play area and all
but ignored me when I tossed a ball to her. Was not afraid of me at all. She
had a gentle mouth when I offered her a treat - she did not come to me when
called to her, whistled or talked excitedly. She only came slowly to me when
she SAW I had
a cookie,
She did not respond to anything verbal.
I pulled out all the buzz works, ball, play, cookie, treat, car ride, kids,
home, squirrel, etc - If I got animated and gestured (and she saw me) she
would come to me. If i said all the same things and stood still with my hands
folded, she didn't move. If she was not looking at me she had NO response.
She responded to me only when she saw me motioning toward her, opening my hand
or patting the ground for her to come to me. It did not matter if I was
silent nor talking, she only responded when she could see me.
She was easily distracted by motion
and intently watched people in the parking lot, or was watching the ducks on
the pond. I had many opportunities to sneak up behind her and clap my hands
LOUDLY about a foot behind her head and she didn't flinch. I snapped my
fingers a few inches from her ears without any response - but she flinched
when I blew on them.
Overall - she was VERY sweet and
loving, she warmed up to me after 5 minutes and she put her head in my lap
when I sat on the bench and talked to her. She let me play with her feet,
inspect her ears and teeth. She never once got upset with me. The woman at
the kennel said she has never heard her bark and commented that she is
"always very calm and laid back" even when the other dogs get riled
up.
I think she is very adoptable - she walked
well and maintained eye contact while on a leash - she seemed to be pretty
trusting of men and unsure of the female handler - I did not have time to
test her with anyone else.
